Socceroos 2010 South Africa World Cup Squad Announced

Pim Verbeek has named a ‘Provisional’ 31 man squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The squad needs to be trimmed by a further 8 by the time the World Cup comes around.

Right Now, the 31 hopefuls are:

Keeper: Mark Schwarzer (Fulham), Adam Federici (Reading), Brad Jones (Middlesbrough), Eugene Galekovic (Adelaide United)

Defenders: Lucas Neill (Galatasaray, capt), Craig Moore (uncontracted), Luke Wilkshire (Dinamo Moscow), Scott Chipperfield (FC Basel), David Carney (FC Twente), Rhys Williams (Middlesbrough), Mark Milligan (JEF United), Jade North (Tromso), Michael Beauchamp (Al-Jazira), Shane Lowry (Aston Villa).

Midfielders: Jason Culina (Gold Coast), Vince Grella (Blackburn), Brett Emerton (Blackburn), Mark Bresciano (Palermo), Brett Holman (AZ Alkmaar), Tim Cahill (Everton), Dario Vidosic (MSV Duisburg), Carl Valeri (Sassuolo), Mile Jedinak (Antalyaspor), Nick Carle (Crystal Palace), Tommy Oar (Utrecht), James Holland (AZ Alkmaar), Richard Garcia (Hull)

Strikers: Harry Kewell (Galatasaray), Josh Kennedy (Nagoya), Nikita Rukavytsya (Roeselare), Scott McDonald (Middlesborough)

The team will most likely only take 2 keepers from the 4 selected so the remainder of those dropped will come from the remainder of the players.

Injuries have led to Verbeek selecting 31 in the provisional squad rather than the expected 27. Kewell and Bresciano, important links in the Socceroos line up, remain under a cloud despite the fact that both players are maintaining confidence that they will be OK by the time the Cup comes around.

It’s a real shame the likes of Sterjovski, Burns and Coyne didn’t make it, they helped the Socceroos to qualify and won’t be going now.

I like the look of the selection though, it will be interesting to see who makes the final cut!

The Player that the socceroos need the most is Nick Carle ! he motivates the team and brings them up the field. he has good techniques , skills, and soccer is not all about running its also about the foot work.
