Ron Bakir – passion for Australian and Lebanese football
Ron Bakir has opened up about his passion for football and with the 2010 world cup in hand, he has taken the opportunity to raise awareness levels for the Australian and Lebanese national teams. His love of the sport began a long time ago back in his native Lebanon when he was a boy kicking a tattered ball around his yard with his friends. Although never quite talented enough as a player to be invited to play anywhere he has a long-standing love of the sport. The Lebanese team need all the support they can get because the country has only limited resources to offer them. The National team from Lebanon had a tough trip trying to qualify for the 2010 World Cup and even though they beat India 4-1 in the qualifiers, disruption within the team and coaches eventually saw a decline in team performance and they never made it to the finals. Ron Bakir mediated valuable sponsorship deals to try and help the Lebanese team to real South Africa for the finals but despite the extra financial help, the team performed poorly on the field in comparison to their previous qualifying matches. With the Lebanese team out of the running, Ron Bakir turned his attentions to the Australian team and helped run a concerted campaign to muster support for them. His media knowledge and communications business experience undoubtedly helped in the promotional efforts and he used his wide range of contacts to its fullest to get results! Ron’s efforts not only enabled more people to be able to see the matches, it also raised local awareness of the World Cup soccer and encouraged more people to take an interest in the sport. One of the biggest achievements was in getting local bars and restaurants to show the matches rather than other sporting events which has broadened the public image of the sport as a whole. Although he has only played a small part in the overall 2010 World Cup competition, contributions like Ron Bakir’s play a valuable part in helping to keep the sport popular and funded properly through appropriate sponsorship; without assistance like this, the sport would rely solely on large corporations for support and the money would not find its way back to the people who love and watch soccer so it is great to see successful entrepreneurs helping out at grass roots level and supporting the sport they love!
